Another part of this season that brings me joy is my heritage and the traditions of my family. As I have mentioned in earlier posts, I come from a long line of Swedish matriarchs on my mother’s side. Every Christmas Eve, I travel back in time to my Gran’s house, my great-grandmother’s home, my great-great grandmother’s festive table. We have a tradition of an annual Christmas Eve Yulefest (that’s Scandinavian for Christmas Party). This year, my husband and I will continue this tradition at our home with sweet baby Juno. In these weeks leading up to the event, we have been baking cookies, preparing meatballs, and “decking the halls” with lots of holiday cheer! I, of course, had the wonderful job of creating the invitations.
For the invitations, I decided to create individual monoprints on the back of each card. That way, each guest would have their own unique piece of art. After monoprinting, I hand wrote the words – “god jul” – meaning “merry christmas” in Swedish. Since I have been designing the invitations, this phrase always appears somewhere on the card. I also stamped a dala horse (a traditional piece of Swedish folk art) which can be found throughout my childhood home, as well as the home of my Gran. All these traditions and designs came together to form a pretty fantastic invitation. See for yourself:
After my work with the invitation, I continued monoprinting using the same colors and styles to create Batch No. 10. There are cards and tags and again, lots of holiday cheer! Any one of these cards or tags will make your gift extra special for the receiver.
Find this batch and all my cards at the Avondale Artwalk on Thursday, December 14th from 5-9pm. I hope to see you there!
Need a little holiday cheer?
On a side note, I know the holidays can be hard for certain people for a variety of reasons. If you need a little joy this time of year, feel free to enjoy this little person who has brought abundant amounts of joy to my life.
